8th Annual Cycle the Erie Canal Bike Tour to Arrive In Syracuse

Carmella R. Mantello, Director of the New York State Canal Corporation, will hold a press conference on Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the Erie Canal Museum at 318 Erie Boulevard East in Syracuse, Onondaga County (directions below), to welcome the more than 500 cyclists from 38 states participating in the 8th annual Cycling the Erie Canal tour.

Cycling the Erie Canal is organized by Parks and Trails New York (PTNY) and sponsored by the New York State Canal Corporation.

Canal Corporation and Parks and Trails New York representatives, as well as local representatives will be on hand to answer any questions about the trail’s success. In addition, photo and television footage opportunities will be available.

The 400-mile bicycle tour began on Sunday, July 9, 2006 in Buffalo, and will end on Sunday, July 16 in Albany, New York. About two-thirds of the 400-mile route is on the completed portion of the Canalway Trail, which will one day provide an uninterrupted 524 miles of Trail.

Take Exit #34A onto I-481 South toward Syracuse. Take Exit #4 onto 690 West toward Syracuse. Take Exit #13 for Townsend Street. Turn left onto Townsend Street, and then turn right onto Water Street. The Erie Canal Museum will be located two blocks down on the right.
