NYS Canal Corporation to Kick-Off the Official Start of 2006 Navigation Season
Canal System Opening Early for First Time in 33 Years
Carmella R. Mantello, Director of the New York State Canal
Corporation, will hold a press conference and photo opportunity to mark the
early opening of the New York State Canal System on Friday, April 28 at 12:00
p.m. at Lock 2 in Waterford, Saratoga County (directions below). This will mark
the first time the Canal System has opened in April in 33 years.
Members of the media, including photographers, are invited to attend and film
the first boats entering the Canal System.

Directions to Lock 2:
Take the NYS Thruway to Exit 23 to I-787 and continue northbound to the end.
Turn right onto Route 32 (Saratoga Avenue) north over bridge into Waterford.
Follow Saratoga Avenue to the end (it will become 9th Street) and cross bridge
over Erie Canal. Bear right sharply onto Broad Street and head toward Village.
Just after passing St. Mary’s Church on left, cross small bridge over old
Champlain Canal. Take an immediate right at sign onto Lock 2 access road. Cross
over small bridge over spillway and park in parking lot. Lock 2 is within a
short walk of the Waterford Visitor Center and promenade.
