Updated Schedule for Historic Day Peckinpaugh
Canal Motorship on Whistle-stop Journey Across the Erie Canal

The New York State Canal Corporation today announced an updated schedule for the historic motorship, the Day Peckinpaugh, as it makes its way along the New York State Barge Canal from Lockport, Niagara County to Waterford, Rensselaer County.

The Peckinpaugh will travel today from Weedsport to Baldwinsville and continue its journey eastward (complete schedule attached). Scheduling issues have resulted in several extended stopovers in canal communities along the way, extending the timeframe for the vessel's journey. The Peckinpaugh is now expected to arrive in Waterford on November 4, 2005.

The historic barge was purchased by the New York State Museum this summer, with assistance from the Canal Society of New York and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission, and is being towed to Waterford by the New York State Canal Corporation. The Canal Corporation has been working with its partners and crew members from the Peckinpaugh to do maintenance, repairs and minor exterior restoration work to get the vessel in good working order. Once in Waterford, the barge will be fully restored and transformed into a floating museum and historical exhibit to teach school children and the public about New York history and the Erie Canal.

During the trip, the barge will pass through numerous small towns, villages and cities along the Erie Canal. In addition to celebrating the rich maritime history of the Canal and the historic significance of the Day Peckinpaugh, the three-week trip will help highlight community waterfront revitalization efforts.

A complete schedule is attached. Please be advised that dates are tentative and may change due to weather, canal conditions or other unforeseen technical difficulties experienced during the trip. For more information or to confirm locations and dates, please call the New York State Canal Corporation at 518-436-3055.
