Historic Day Peckinpaugh Arriving in Rochester Region This Weekend
The New York State Canal Corporation is pleased to announce that the historic motorship, the Day Peckinpaugh, will be arriving in Monroe County and the Rochester region this weekend as it makes its way along the New York State Erie Canal from Lockport, Niagara County to Waterford, Rensselaer County.
The Peckinpaugh is scheduled to arrive in Holley, New York this evening. From there, the vessel will travel as far as the town of Gates on Saturday and is expected to tie up in Pittsford on Sunday evening.
The historic barge was purchased by the New York State Museum this summer, with assistance from the Canal Society of New York and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission, and is being towed to Waterford by the New York State Canal Corporation. The Canal Corporation has been working with its partners and crew members from the Peckinpaugh to do maintenance and repairs and minor exterior restoration work to get the vessel in good working order. Once in Waterford, the barge will be fully restored and transformed into a floating museum and historical exhibit to teach school children and the public about New York history and the Erie Canal.
During the trip, the barge will pass by hundreds of small towns, villages and cities and tie up each evening at a different location along the Erie Canal. In addition to celebrating the rich maritime history of the Canal and the Peckinpaugh, the two-week trip will help highlight communities’ waterfront revitalization efforts.
A complete schedule follows. Please be advised that dates are tentative and may change due to weather or unforeseen mechanical difficulties experienced during the trip. For more information or to confirm locations and dates, please call the New York State Canal Corporation at 518-436-3055.
