SEND-OFF CELEBRATION FOR DAY PECKINPAUGH IN LOCKPORT
Historic Barge to Kick-Off Two-Week Journey Along the NYS Canal

The New York State Canal Corporation, in partnership with the New York State Museum, The Canal Society of New York, the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission and the City of Lockport, will hold a “Send-Off Celebration” press conference for the historic Erie Canal barge, the Day Peckinpaugh, on Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lockport Locks and Erie Canal Cruises, 210 Market Street, Lockport (directions below).

The barge was purchased by the New York State Museum, with assistance from the Canal Society of New York and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission, and is being towed to Waterford, NY by the New York State Canal Corporation. Once there, the barge will be fully restored and transformed into a floating museum and historical exhibit to teach school children and the public about New York history and the Erie Canal. The barge will travel through the quaint villages and towns along the New York State Canal System, making stops at several places along the way.

Local and elected officials, including Canal Corporation Director Carmella Mantello, Senator George Maziarz, Lockport Mayor Michael Tucker and other Federal, State and local officials are scheduled to attend the press conference.

From Buffalo & West: Take I-290 east to I-990. Exit for Rte. 263. Follow to route 78 north. Continue on route 78 until route 31 east. Take third left (north) onto Locust/Market St. Cross Main St. and 210 Market St. is on the left at the base of the hill.
