LOCAL AUTHOR TO BEGIN SUMMER-LONG ODESSEY VIA
HISTORIC NEW YORK STATE CANAL SYSTEM

The New York State Canal Corporation announced today that noted author Betsy Frawley Haggerty, former Editor of Offshore, will officially kick-off her summer long adventure on the New York State Canal System from Waterford on Sunday, June 12.

“We’re pleased that Ms. Haggerty has chosen to utilize the Canal System to complete this summer-long adventure. The trip highlights the vast recreational opportunities that exist along New York’s historic waters, as well as promotes the importance of the nation’s natural resources.” said Canal Corporation Executive Director Michael Fleischer.

Haggerty, is making the journey to research her new book: 15 Weeks on the Erie Canal. She will hold a reception for members of the media and canal community at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, at the Waterford Canal Harbor Visitor’s Center.

“The new book will be a memoir of my travel experiences on the Canal System,” Haggerty said. “I plan to weave in the history of all three generations of the waterway, but will focus mostly on the present system using, where possible, oral histories from those who worked on the Canal.”
