NEW YORK STATE CANAL SYSTEM

NOTICE TO MARINERS

Chart 14786

Lowered Water Level
Erie Canal

September 4, 2009

Mariners are advised that the New York Power Authority (NYPA) will be lowering the water level approximately 2 feet below typical summer navigation levels, or one-tenth of one foot below charted normal pool, upstream of Vischer Ferry (Lock E-7) on the Erie Canal on Thursday, September 10th. This will be done in order to modify the fish passage on the dam. The water level will be lowered beginning at 4:00 AM on Thursday.

The NYPA anticipates that the water level will be returned to normal in approximately 24 to 48 hours. Depending on weather and/or flow conditions in the river the work may be cancelled and rescheduled by NYPA. For more information, please call David Weiman of the NYPA at (518) 287-6340.

These temporary low water levels may affect some vessels docked at marinas or private slips, in shallower water near shore.

The Canal Corporation appreciates the public’s patience.

For updates and information on Canal conditions please call 1-800-4CANAL4 or visit www.nyscanals.gov.  Additionally, mariners may sign up for automatic e-mail and text message alerts through the Canal TRANSalert service.  This service is offered to notify mariners of major incidents and emergencies that may affect navigation on the New York State Canal System.  To register for this service, please visit www.nyscanals.gov/tas/.
