NEW YORK STATE CANAL SYSTEM

NOTICE TO MARINERS

Canal System
Update

July 20, 2006

Sections of the New York State Canal System remain closed due to record rainfall and disastrous flooding in late June and heavy rainfall during the month of July. While work continues and levels continue to recede in areas still affected, the Canal Corporation is projecting that, barring additional rainfall, many of these sections will re-open soon.

Mariners are advised that (weather permitting) the Oswego Canal, and the Erie Canal from Brewerton to Baldwinsville, including Lock E-23 to all traffic, and Lock E-24 to eastbound traffic, are projected to re-open at 7 AM on Friday, July 21st.

Additionally, The Cayuga-Seneca Canal from Lock CS-1 to the Cayuga-Seneca junction and the Erie Canal from the Cayuga-Seneca junction to Lock E-25 will re-open for navigation at 7 AM on Friday, July 21st, weather permitting. At that time, the Erie Canal between the Cayuga-Seneca junction and Lock E-24 will remain closed.

Mariners are advised that (weather permitting) the Erie Canal between and including Locks E-24 and E-25 is projected to re-open for all vessel traffic at 7 AM on Sunday, July 23rd.

Mariners are reminded that the 48 hour mooring limit at canal service ports, harbors, walls and docks has been suspended, and that additional overflow docking is available in the Waterford Flight between Locks E-2 and E-4.

Mariners are advised that vessels seeking an alternate route around Lock E-10 and having a height of 17' or greater above the waterline may not transit the Champlain Canal, which has a controlling vertical clearance of 17'.

Mariners should take all possible steps to minimize vessel wakes which can cause property damage. Mariners should be on the lookout for debris and report any damaged or missing navigational aids to the New York State Canal Corporation.

For updates and information, mariners are advised to monitor 1-800-4CANAL4 and www.canals.state.ny.us.
