NOTICE TO MARINERS

July 5, 2006

Mariners are advised that the Erie Canal from Lock E-2 to Lock E-8 and from Lock E-16 west to and including Lock E-24 has re-opened. However, the following aids-to-navigation in this section have been reported off station: 491B, 491, 498, 489, 494, 487, 492, 485, 490, 483, 488, 486, 479, 477, 482, 480, 475, 473B, 476, 473A, 459, 464, 457, 462, 455, 453, 451, 451A, 449, 458, 456, and 456A. Crews are resetting these aids and until this work is completed mariners are advised to proceed with extreme caution. Additionally, all mariners transiting through Guard Gate #3 (Indian Castle) must utilize the south span until further notice. A large tree is obstructing the north span and will be removed as soon as possible.

Additionally, the Champlain Canal from Lock C-12 to Lock C-7, and the entire Cayuga-Seneca Canal and Oswego Canal have reopened. No discrepancies with any aids-to-navigation have been reported in these areas. However, mariners are advised to proceed with extreme caution and be aware of floating debris and take steps to minimize vessel wakes which can create property damage.

The Champlain Canal between Lock C-7 and Lock C-1 remains closed but this section is projected to open within a week. The Erie Canal from Lock E-8 to Lock E-16 remains closed and parts of this section will reopen gradually over the next two to three weeks. However, extensive work will be required at Lock E-10 and this lock is not projected to reopen for two months.

Mariners should avoid swimming in any Mohawk River sections of the Canal System due to unknown contaminants and heavy debris in the water.

For updates and information, mariners are advised to monitor 1-800-4CANAL4 and www.canals.state.ny.us.
