NEW YORK STATE CANAL SYSTEM
NOTICE TO
MARINERS
April 28, 2005
Changes to Opening Schedule
The New York State Canal System will open as
scheduled for navigation at 7 A.M. on Sunday, May 1, along most
sections of the Canal. However, heavy rainfall during the month of
April and persistent high water will delay the opening in some
areas.
The Erie Canal from Waterford to Oneida Lake, and
from Lyons to Tonawanda, will open on schedule. In addition, the
Champlain Canal will open on schedule in its entirety.
The Oswego Canal, and the Erie Canal from Lock
E-23 (Brewerton) to Lock 28A (Lyons), will remain closed until
waters recede and levels are safe for navigation. The
Cayuga-Seneca Canal will open as scheduled between Seneca and
Cayuga Lakes, but will remain closed from Lock CS-1 to the
junction of the Erie Canal. These sections will be opened as
soon as buoys are in place, and conditions permit the resumption
of safe navigation.
An auxiliary channel has been established in the
vicinity of Pendleton on the Erie Canal near the site of an
embankment failure caused by heavy rainfall during the month of
April. Current channel depth at this location is 8 feet, with a
channel width of 40 feet. Operations at the site to deepen and
widen the available channel in this area will continue, and the
auxiliary channel will remain open to vessel traffic while work
progresses.
A comprehensive Changes to Published Depth Notice
to Mariners will be issued in May with detailed information on
available depths at Pendleton and other areas where controlling
depth may differ from published depth.
For updates and information, mariners are advised
to monitor 1-800-4CANAL4 and
