Camping
Along The Canalway Trail
In 2001 the Canal Corporation announced a new program that
will make touring along the Canalway Trail easier for
enthusiasts.
New Biker-Hiker-Boater Campsites are being opened along the
Canalway Trail that include and area for four tents, potable
water, picnic tables, grills and toilets. Stays are limited to
one night and are available on a first come first serve basis.
The facilities are open only to bicyclists, hikers and
boaters. The new campsites are being modeled after similar
facilities along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National
Recreation Area near Washington, D.C.
New campsites will be added each year
at canal locks and other publicly owned locations next to the
canal and Canalway Trail. The long-term goal is to establish a
network of campsites along the Canalway Trail spaced
approximately 35-mile apart.
